The 2022 Poultry Person winner is Máire Burnett, Technical Director at the British Poultry Council (BPC).

She joined the BPC as Executive Officer for Agriculture in 2000. She leads on the trade association’s work on avian influenza, antibiotic stewardship, animal health and welfare, food safety, environmental management, EU exit, and international trade policy.

Máire is passionate about the sector’s drive for excellence in bird health and welfare, she sits on a number of Government stakeholder groups including the Defra Avian Influenza Core Group, the Animal Health and Welfare Board for England (AHWBE) Sectors Council, and plays a key role in Defra’s Export Certification Users Group, and EU exit industry/government working groups, the Food Resilience Industry Forum and FSA groups. Máire is an active member of the UK Poultry Health & Welfare Group and is a past chair of the Group.

Máire represents the British poultry meat industry on international forums such as the Association of Poultry Processors and Poultry Trade in the EU (AVEC) and is part of the working groups on animal health and welfare and trade. She also sits on the International Poultry Council’s trade and animal health and welfare working groups and on the International Poultry Welfare Alliance broiler welfare committee.

Máire has previously worked for the USA Poultry and Egg Export Council at their European office in Hamburg, Germany.
