Michael farms 270 acres of arable land with a very small pedigree South Devon cattle herd in South Derbyshire, and an equine breeding and competition business that he runs with his son.

He is Chairman of the Animal Health & Welfare Board for England which he founded in 2011. Michael also chairs the National Fallen Stock Company and has previously been the director of the East Midlands Development Agency and Chair of the National Register of Sprayer Operators, as well as a trustee of the British Horse Society.

Michael sat on the NFU’s Council and was Chair of the NFU’s National Food Standards Committee (c 2000 – 04).
